Canary Ice Cream: The Sweetest Spot in Town

January 1, 2024

By Ty Walker

I scream! You scream! We all scream for ice cream. Or so the saying goes.
The Canary Ice Cream And Tea Shop has locals singing like a bird about the sweetest spot in town. The tune they’re playing is attracting ice cream lovers of all ages to the quaint new addition to the Hoodland Bazaar at the Plaza Shopping Center off Highway 26.
Tucked away in the back side of Welches’ main shopping center, it’s easy to miss. But once you’ve treated yourself to an all-organic smoothie, you’ll be coming back for more.
“Local people are getting to know where we’re at because we’re on the back side here,” Canary Ice Cream Manager Robin Grosser said . “People are getting familiar with where we’re located.”
Mt. Hood residents can thank enterprising brothers and business partners AJ and Khalid Kamahwee for expanding their Hoodland Bazaar offering to include the ice cream shop. While you’re there, check out their collection of imported gifts from Afghanistan and other parts of the world.
Grosser, who has more than 20 years of restaurant experience as a server, said they are proud to carry Umpqua brand ice cream from Roseburg.
“That seems to be what everybody wanted,” she said.
There are 15 flavors in all, but space in their display case for only eight at a time. So Grosser switches them in and out depending on the season.
Peppermint candy and huckleberry cheesecake are two of the most popular varieties. A lot of the kids prefer cookie dough flavor.
“It’s really fun so far,” Grosser said. “It’s fun to see the kids come in and get really excited. Everybody’s happy when you get ice cream.”
Besides basic chocolate and vanilla, other flavors include dairy free lemon sorbet, sherbet, pistachio almond, chocolate peanut butter, and for coffee lovers, caramel cold brew with chocolate chips. Sugar cones, waffle cones, cups, milkshakes and sundaes are available.
Just thinking about their organic smoothies will have your mouth watering. Try a very berry, which has a blend of raspberries, blackberries, strawberries and blueberries, or one of the power greens – spinach, kale or avocado.
A variety of teas will be offered this summer, along with other sweets and outside seating in the sunshine. Hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Sunday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.
The Canary Ice Cream And Tea shop is located at 68278 Highway 26, Welches. Give them a call at (503)564-9001.
