Portland, Oregon – Portland filmmakers and mountaineers Ned Thanhouser and Jeff Thomas will premiere at the Mt Hood Cultural Center & Museum (88900 Government Camp Loop, Government Camp, OR 97028) on Friday May 10, 2024, their latest documentary telling the history of the fire lookout cabin that was built on the summit of Mt. Hood in 1915.

US Forest Service ranger Lige Coalman had a vision for a “Cabin in the Sky” to spot forest fires to summon suppression efforts that would save lives and property. Coalman’s vision for the cabin blossomed into a destination for lovers, a refuge for climbers, and a location to record history.

Thanhouser and Thomas have been making short documentary films together since 2016 when they produced “The Awl,” a documentary about pioneering climbers at Oregon’s Smith Rock in central Oregon. They produced a half-dozen more videos documenting pioneering climbers, including Bill Ramsey, Alan Watts, and Pat Callis, and the routes they established. Their most recent effort “Ranger: The Canine Alpinist” is about a dog that summited Mt. Hood 500 times! This film was selected by the New York Dog Film Festival where it was screened in a theatre last year to an enthusiastic audience of canine lovers in downtown Manhattan.
